Barge Design

Barge Design’s Nashville headquarters creates a workplace where a culture of collaboration can thrive. As a nationally ranked engineering and architecture firm with over 60 years of experience, Barge was looking to bring the history and purpose of their practice into every detail of their new space.

Transitioning from a multi-floor tenant space with large, high-paneled workstations to a centralized open floor plan was a big change for the firm. The new facility aimed to consolidate square footage while increasing functionality and a community-centered work culture that breaks down barriers and encourages teamwork and transparency. An open plan, access to daylighting, ample storage and interactive community space were critical components of the new space.

Custom ping-pong tables in the large breakroom were handcrafted by a local furniture builder and Barge CEO Bob Higgins. In addition, Bob personally helped local craftsman construct benches made from locally-reclaimed railroad ties and conference tables that utilize truss-like supports that structurally and symbolically represent their building industry roots in Nashville.

Health and wellness was also a significant consideration in the new office space. A primary goal of the project was to make the healthy choice the easy choice. This translated into the built environment in a number of ways such as height-adjustable workstations for all employees, an onsite fitness center, showers on each floor, and built-in bike racks. Ancillary furniture placed throughout the workspace encourages movement and impromptu collaboration. Overall, the furniture successfully supports the company objectives while balancing the practical needs of each individual employee.
